We visited PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts in May 2024. The visit took place at the central offices of PXL in Hasselt.
The beautiful city of Hasselt is located just an hour’s train ride from Brussels. With a population of around 80,000, the city lies in the province of Limburg along the Demer River in the Flemish region. Founded as early as the 7th century, the old city is definitely worth a visit. Despite its rich history, Hasselt is a modern and developing city. Along the streets of the city center, you’ll find a variety of cozy cafés perfect for a leisurely coffee break. Hasselt is particularly known for its local Gin, or Jenever, and chocolate making, which can be considered an art form. The beautiful murals that adorn the cityscape are also a delightful sight.
During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Ruth Jamers, Frauke van der Rijt, and Kristien Bauwens, staff members of the central department of education, and the institutional coordinator of international relations, respectively.

The visit included presentations from both SAMK and PXL, discussions on educational approaches, flexible curricula, mixed learning, distance learning, and the use of online tools and techniques in lessons. We also had the opportunity to learn about PXL’s tracking and registration system for internships, workplace learning, projects, and graduation assignments, as well as their professionalization and support for teachers.
The visit also included a tour of the PXL-Digital department, where we learned about online learning in joint programs, course units with a strong grounding in online learning, and the use of virtual reality in classes. The visit concluded with a visit to the PXL Centre for Digital Learning, where we learned about the coaching and training strategies of the Centre, the MiXed learning label, and the use of VR and XR in the study programs of PXL-Healthcare.
